F.A.Q.
What can your dog expect at The Mutt Hut?
Your dog will be examined so we can discuss the grooming requirements. Grooming will take around 2-3 hours depending on the breed but may take longer on larger breeds or if they are being hand stripped. If your dog is matted we will discuss this prior to any grooming beginning, as it may be necessary to clip any matts to lessen any distress to your dog.
What’s included in a full groom at The Mutt Hut?
Brushing & combing: Prior to bathing your dog will be thoroughly brushed and combed and again at the drying stage.
Bathing: This entails bathing your dog with the required shampoo & conditioner & rinsing thoroughly.
Drying: All dogs are hand dried using a thermostatically controlled drier. Please note I do not use cage drying.
Clipped and scissoring: Once dried your dog is brushed again, I check paws & remove any matts or excess hair as discussed earlier with you, the dog will be clipped or scissored to breed specification. Please note dogs that are hand stripped are not bathed.
Ear cleaning, nail trimming: Ears are checked and cleaned and where necessary hair will be removed for the ear canal and nails will be trimmed if necessary.
In between grooms: I also offer an in-between groom where your dog is washed and dried to breed specification.
Grooming tips
1. Tools you may find helpful to keep your dog well groomed in between professional grooming appointments. You will need to invest in a good slicker brush. These are the type with a plastic or wooden handle and small stainless steel bristles. It is also a good idea to invest in a stainless steel comb to thoroughly comb through the brushed area.
2. What age should I get my puppy groomed professionally? It is best to start all grooming from a very early age while the puppy is still learning. The earlier you start the less likely you are to struggle with grooming later on.
3. How often should I bath my dog? In between professional grooming sessions you should only need to bath your dog three to four times a year.
4. Can I cut my own dog's nails? Dog’s nails do not need clipping on a regular basis, especially if your dog is walked on the pavement. Dogs that are walked regularly on grass however will need some attention approximately every 2 months.
5. My dog has a dry coat and seems to have dandruff, what can I do? In some rare cases dogs do suffer with skin problems. Symptoms generally manifest themselves as a dull coat and in some instances the skin will appear to be flaky and will also irritate the dog. It is always advisable to seek professional advice from your vet in these cases.
6. Can I pluck my own dogs ears? Some breeds of dog grow hair inside the ear. It is possible that this can cause an ear infection if it is not removed on a regular basis. I would always recommend this is done professionally.
7. Should I clean my dogs’ teeth? I would suggest this is done regularly using dog specific toothpaste and either a child’s toothbrush or a specialist finger brush.
